Description
Cellier – Barcarolle. Alfred Cellier (1844 – 1891) was an English composer, orchestrator and conductor. Cellier conducted many of the original productions of the most famous Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. He also wrote the overtures to several of them. Conducting engagements followed at many theatres in London, New York and on tour in Britain, America and Australia. He composed over a dozen operas and other works for the theatre as well as for orchestra.
This Cellier – Barcarolle is the only instrumental solo he wrote. It is a charming, Romantic piece by this little known English composer. A lovely 6/8 G major melody is counterbalanced by a stronger and more dynamic E major central section. The initial melody returns in an expanded form before a codetta ends with the second theme winding down to the end. This is a substantial piece which, at approximately 6 minutes in length, would make a good recital piece for any occasion.
