Description
”Farewell Song” is a 1915 song based on a poem written by Li Shutong. The melody was adapted from an old American song “Dreaming of Home and Mother”. Although that version of the song was long forgotten it became popular in Japan where Li Shutong first heard it whilst studying painting. After he came back China he became the first Chinese educator of Western music in China. In 1915 he set a poem he had written to this melody and the song has enjoyed an everlasting popularity. The song is constantly being covered by different Chinese singers. ”Farewell Song” has also become the most famous song in China to express the feeling when people have to say goodbye. Many movies select this song as the background music and students also sing this song in their graduation ceremony.
