Description

Anton Bruckner: Ave Maria gratia plena, WAB 6 (1856), is a stunning motet for seven voices a cappella. It’s one of his earliest sacred works and beautifully blends Renaissance polyphony with Romantic harmony; a true gem of spiritual and musical intensity. Several things make this piece special:  It opens with a solemn intonation of “Ave Maria” in unison, reminiscent of Gregorian chant. Then it unfolds into rich, flowing polyphony. It was written for seven voices (SSAATTB), and uses the expanded vocal forces to create lush, reverent harmonies. The reverence and serenity of the setting reflect deep piety; this was very personal music for Bruckner, a devout Catholic. Bruckner: Ave Maria gratia plena is arranged here for a 7 part flute choir of 3 flutes, 2 altos and 2 bass flutes.
