Description

Bayly-Nicholson. ‘Long Long Ago’. Thomas Haynes Bayly (1797-1839) was an English poet, songwriter, dramatist and writer.  Written in 1833 and dealing with nostalgia ‘Long, Long Ago’ was one of his most popular songs. The flautist Henry Nicholson (1825-1907) was probably the last survivor of the orchestra that played at the first performance of the Elijah (1846), conducted by Mendelssohn himself. This veteran flautist also played (in 1847) under Berlioz. Nicholson’s ‘Introduction, Theme and Variations’ is presented here in a new edition. Bayly/Nicholson. ‘Long Long Ago’. includes his original heading of ‘brilliant variations for the flute’.
